Day Trip to Sóller from Palma – Everything You Need to Know

The day trip to Sóller was an experience that I will never forget. Since it was February, it was pleasant enough to enjoy nature but too cold to get inside the sea. Therefore, Sóller was a perfect excuse and a unique discovery during our trip to Mallorca. So, I decided to write an individual blog about it.

Sóller is a rural town in the west of Mallorca. In fact, it is strategically situated in a beautiful valley between the mountains and the sea with Olive Gardens and Orange Trees. In addition, it is mainly inhabited by Spanish people whose families have resided there for hundreds of years. Therefore, it is a great place to enjoy the traditional ways of the Spanish people and get an insight of their culture.

Best time to visit

Due to its temperate climate, Sóller has beautiful weather all year around. However, tourists crowd the places during the summer months of July and August. We went there in February to enjoy some amazing weather.

If you want to enjoy some local delicacies along with tradition, you can visit Sóller on any Saturday. It has a very charming Farmer’s Market every Saturday right next to the train station.

Getting there

Incidentally, there is a vintage train that has been running since 1912. that takes you from Palma de Mallorca to Sóller. You can book your tickets at the train station. However, make sure to arrive a bit early to avoid the rush. There is usually a train every hour.

Once you reach Port de Sóller, there is a vintage tram that takes you across the town into a beach.

Our Day Trip to Sóller

We got a return ticket for the vintage train from Palma Intermodal Station to Port de Sóller at the station and found ourselves the perfect seats on the train.

Tip: The one-way ticket price from Palma to Sóller is 25 Euros and another 7 Euros for the tram. However, the best value is to get a combo return ticket for both the train and the tram for 32 Euros.

Vintage Train ride

The train looked and felt vintage. We were surprised it was so well maintained. Surprisingly, it totally made us travel back in time. Of course, the train ride was even more enjoyable. For instance, there were gardens of Olive trees and Orange trees on both sides of the route. In addition, it was blooming season. At one point, the train even stopped so that people could get down and take pictures of the breath-taking valley. Another option is to take a quick picture on the empty train while others are busy taking pictures outside.

Vintage Tram ride And Walking tour

Once we reached Sóller, we were welcomed by a crowded Farmer’s market that seemed to have no end. Luckily, it was Saturday so it was time for the weekly market. Naturally, we explored the market for a long time and picked up some oranges, loaves of bread, cheeses, and wine for a picnic later. After a while, we took the famous tram into town.

As a matter of fact, this was a very memorable ride. Everything from the seats to the honking to the ticket inspector was vintage. In addition, the ticket inspector actually punched our ticket inside the tram. Meanwhile, the tram made its way through more Olive Gardens and residential areas with beautiful houses and children playing football in the playgrounds. In conclusion, it was a typical Spanish neighborhood at its best. After 30 minutes of non-stop fun, we finally reached Port de Sóller.

After arriving, we saw yachts parked in the port. In addition, there was a little beach where children were playing and enjoying the sun. Incidentally, we were very hungry so we had some Spanish omelette with wine. Surprisingly, it was way too refreshing. To sum up. we spent the entire day exploring the place. We even made a picnic at the beach.
After, we took another epic ride in the tram followed by the train. In conclusion, it was an out of the world experience. We were exhausted at the end of the day and made our way back to our Airbnb.

What to eat

Sóller is full of restaurants but it could be expensive. It is best if you carry a picnic with you and enjoy it on the beach. If you are there on a Saturday you are in for a treat. Buy local tomatoes and other delicacies from the farmer’s market right at the station and enjoy it on the beach.

Where to stay

The staying options in Soller could be very expensive and honestly, there is not much activity after sundown. But if you want to enjoy the Spanish way of life you could stay a night. A day trip from Palma could be perfect.
