The Acropolis in Greece is a structure you may have come across in Calendars and Postcards. This historic structure is located on a hill in the capital city of Athens in Greece.
In fact, it looks like a place that is almost too good to be true and truly a must-visit place. Eventually, on my way to Santorini, I got the lucky opportunity to make a day trip to the Acropolis, and walking on those ancient steps was a dream come true.
More about the Acropolis
The Acropolis in Greece is one of the oldest citadels in the world. It is a striking structure situated on a hill and can be seen from far away. In addition, it is also host to one of the most famous and ancient buildings of the world, The Parthenon.
For instance, the Parthenon is a temple that was made for the Greek Goddess Athena which includes the greatest achievements of Greek artists in the form of sculptures and inscriptions.
Getting there
We arrived at Athens International Airport early in the morning followed by an 8-hour layover in the city. Firstly, we deposited our luggage at Athens Airport. After that, we got out of the Airport.
Next, we took the Metro to see the Acropolis. Alternatively, a cab is an option, but we were tight on time and wanted to avoid traffic delays. Incidentally, the metro line M3 runs directly from the Airport to Monastiraki Station throughout the day. From here, it is just 10 minutes uphill walk to the main gate of Acropolis.
Our trip to Acropolis in Greece
Once we entered the steps of Acropolis in Greece, we were swept into a different century. Breathtaking views and towering structures surrounded us from all around. Of course, I will let the pictures do the talking now.
After, we followed the marked paths throughout the Acropolis and took many pictures. We read some of the placards in front of the buildings and sculptures, which were very informative and interesting.
In short, we had a short but satisfying trip to the Acropolis in Greece. Athens is an ancient city with innumerable places to discover. If you are into History and Architecture, Athens is an amazing stop for a couple of days.
Also, the Acropolis Museum is worth a visit. Since our goals were different this time, we were on our way, but sure will be back here for a longer break. To sum up, we ended the long and historic day on a high note and returned to the airport to catch our flight to Santorini.

Tips to visit the acropolis in greece
Tip: Make sure to buy the tickets to the Acropolis online especially if you have kids because there is an impossibly long queue at the front of the Acropolis almost the whole day. This is the official site to buy the tickets. However, make sure the dates are correct because rescheduling is not allowed.
Tip: Carry water and wear comfortable shoes for a safe trip at the Acropolis because there are marble steps everywhere. In addition, they are quite slippery, steep, and dangerous. Therefore, heels and Flip Flops are a complete no-go. I am not exaggerating.
Fun Fact: Since we visited the Acropolis as a layover day trip in Athens, we were unknowingly wearing comfortable sneakers fit for flying. Luckily, these proved to be perfect for walking the slippery steps at the Acropolis. For instance, we literally saw people fall left, right, and centre.
