10 Ultimate Tips to Travel in Europe after COVID-19 (Updated 2021)

The border restrictions across Europe are slowly being relaxed. As a result, countries including Germany and Italy are gradually going back to normal while imposing certain covid-19-related restrictions such as wearing a mask in public transport and shops. Meanwhile, people are also planning their summer holidays cautiously as they eventually come out of the long and tiring lock-down phase.

Travelling, however, would never be the same if the world is unable to control the spread of the pandemic completely. The travel sector is also badly affected because of this. The border restrictions between Switzerland and Germany were lifted in June, 2020. I was travelling in Switzerland last week and so I decided to write this post based on my experience of travelling for the first time after COVID-19. I was not very confident to take a flight, so I took a train from Germany to Switzerland.

Generally, Switzerland is filled with tourists from all over the world but this time it was fairly empty and most of the tourists were from nearby European countries. We travelled in a lot with trains and cable cars during our week-long stay. The best thing about travelling in Switzerland after COVID-19 was how effectively the country is following the rules. If you are able to follow these rules you can significantly reduce the spread of Coronavirus. These are some of the ultimate tips that helped me travel with ease after COVID-19.

10 ultimate tips to travel in Europe after COVID-19

1. Wear a mask in Public transport and enclosed spaces

As we travelled in long-distance trains, we saw many people taking off their masks to take a breath. But I would advise you to not travel unless you can keep the mask on for the entire journey. It is an enclosed place and the chance of the virus being spread is maximum.

2. Avoid public toilets

Try to avoid using public toilets as much as possible. The hotels and Airbnbs are following strict actions to sanitise their places so wait until you get back to your accommodation. If you cannot control it try to use the toilet without touching anything.

3. Observe fellow passengers

If you see a person sitting close to you coughing or sneezing do not panic. Moreover, in case they are not wearing a mask politely ask them to wear one. If they do not listen simply walk away and find another seat or better yet stand. There will be ignorant people everywhere. It is better to avoid arguments in such situations.

4. Carry a hand sanitiser everywhere

Carry a hand sanitiser everywhere, even if you are going out for a minute to pick up food. Use it after touching anything and everything.

5. Carry one mask for each day

Avoid using disposable masks as they are uncomfortable and also harmful to the environment. Carry a different cotton or other washable masks for each day of your travel. Do not repeat the same mask for 2 days without washing. Take an airtight container to keep your mask when you are taking it out. Never touch the inside of the mask.

6. Avoid eating in enclosed spaces

Check if a restaurant is following the rules with seating arrangement before getting in. The best thing to do is get a takeaway and eat at your accommodation or at an open space.

7. Disinfect your phone

You will be taking a lot of pictures with your phone while travelling. The phone screen is a home to germs. Make sure to disinfect your phone every chance you get.

8. Make a base for your travel

It is best when you are not changing your accommodation a lot during your travels. Keep one or two base points and travel around to stay safe.

9. Follow the protocols

This is a time when people will judge you even if you cough or sneeze a little in public enclosed spaces. Better follow the rules and cover you face with your elbow when you do so. This will make people around you feel safer.

10. Read the rules before travelling

Each country has a different rule for travelling after Coronavirus. You must read the rules carefully in the official website of your home country before booking your tickets. There is a reason why some countries are asking you to wear masks only in enclosed places and some countries are imposing wearing masks even in open public places. You must follow these without any questions.

Here is the information regarding travelling from Germany to other countries.

There is no guarantee that you will not have Coronavirus even after following the above tips. These are just some tips to help you prevent it at a basic level and also the tips I followed religiously during my travel plans post COVID-19. Wish you happy and healthy travels!
